The Oscars

A much anticipated highlight of the Brazilian leg of our trip was to see some buildings designed by Oscar Niemeyer, the legendary Brazilian architect who designed the UN HQ in New York, amongst many other fantastic buildings.

Brasilia boasts the most buildings by Niemeyer in one city, but earlier today we went to Niteroi, a city on the other side of the bay to Rio, to see the second largest collection. The Popular Theatre, Oscar Niemeyer Museum and Robert Silveira Memorial are arranged in a complex inaugurated in 2007, Niemeyer’s 100th year. Further along the coast, the Museu de Arte Contemporanea – MAC and Charitas Ferry-Boat Station overlook the waters of Guanabara Bay

Curvaceous white concrete forms and ramps were two things that were high on Oscar’s list of building ‘must haves’.

It has been a very inspiring day and we’re looking forward to hitting Brasilia where we will continue our Niemeyer pilgrimage.

Love from Nick and Lucy
